16 May LIVER CYSTS AND ITS TREATMENT

Also known as hepatic cysts, liver cysts (fluid-filled sacs), are fairly common and can be diagnosed with the help of CT scan or ultrasound. Liver cysts can cause extreme discomfort and pain in the right upper abdominal region. Various categories of liver cysts are:

  • Simple cysts
  • Echinococcosis
  • Polycystic Liver Disease (PLD)
  • Cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma

When a small portion of liver cells degenerates or dies, it may lead to the formation of cysts. Poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle and ageing are some of the factors leading to the development of this condition. Some of the most obvious symptoms of liver cysts are:

  • Liver enlargement
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Internal bleeding
  • Nausea
  • Fever

Generally cysts go away by themselves. However, some malignant and enlarged cysts need to get treated with the help of surgery.

  • Surgery- total removal of cysts using laparoscopy, a minimally invasive technique.
  • Drug therapy- parasitic cysts are often treated using a combination of surgery and chemotherapy that are caused by echinococossis. Drugs may also be prescribed for the same.

Liver cysts that are inherited or congenital cannot be prevented. Proper handling of food and good hygiene can help in keeping parasitic cysts at bay. Intake of fats should be kept as minimum as possible. Also try staying away from fermented foods. Plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits should be included in your diet.
